Commonly known as Doxies, Weiner dogs or Dorkies, Dachshunds are some of the most well know and lovable little dogs in the world. These dogs make great and loyal companions that are literally the go anywhere type dog; whether you’re going to the store or just the park they make the perfect company.
Dachshunds are originally from Germany where they are actually called “Teckel”. This particular breed of dog was developed (relatively slowly, over the course of a century) in order to hunt badgers, which is also where they get their name; “Dachs” German for badger and “Hund” for dog. The Dachshund breed has been very popular in America since about the 1950’s for various reasons, including their boldness in the face of danger.
These dogs are very smart, super active and have a cute look about them that nobody could ever deny. However, it’s important that you don’t give in to those sad looks of longing when you have people food as obesity can become a huge problem for these dogs; a proper feeding regimen, starting when their puppies, is very important.
When you buy your puppy you should take it to the vet as soon as possible. The breeder should have given you information on shots and de-worming that had already taken place. Take this information to the vet of your choice and get the second round of vaccinations. At this time an overall exam will be performed and it would be a good idea to get them on heart worm medication at this time as well. When you’re training your new puppy, all the same basic aspects apply to Dachshunds as much as Wolf Hounds. Remember to be stern and succinct in your commands, but most of all remember to love and enjoy your new baby.
